Cool Stuff and Books
My current audiobooks are the English Teacher by Lily King, and Dreams of my father by Barak Obama. The English Teacher is an interesting fiction story about a 40 year old English teacher that has a son named Peter. She marries a widower with 3 kids. It is not in many ways a complete match. Vivian has a secret that she has not shared with her son and her new husband. The seriousness of the secret is revealed when Peter looks for his father. He has only been provided a sketch by has mother. This books is great at establishing tone from different characters. Set in the 80's during the hostage crisis it projects personal tragedies were occurring at the same time the country was going through its own. This is a good compelling audio books especially near the end of the book. Dreams of my Father by Barak Obama is an account by a presidential candidate of his background. Barak does his own reading. He is good writer. I have enjoyed his perspective on growing up in his Kansas, Hawaii, Indonesia, and Chicago . This book in audio is more interesting than in print. It shows how he has dealt with racism all of his life. There is some interesting insights to what drives him. The cultural aspects of growing up in different areas of the world are illustrated from the first person writing. This is a good listen too.
Broken into very short movies, this site will get you through some pretty interesting content for your computer instruction. Working with quick time movies and a 25 dollar a month subscription these movies will provide you some insight that other forms of instruction just do not offer. My latest is an adventure through the latest CS version of GoLive. GoLive came out without many people writing support books. When the latest CS2 version came out, many of its new features are just not available in instructional context. Their quicktime movies allow you are able to slow it down and figure out some of the new complex moves that the new versions support. Absent in many instructional versions is why you would do a particular move. These are slipped in as well. About 6 non subscriber movies are available for each learning sequence as well. These "samples" will give you a feel as to whether this is the way you can learn. So far I am very pleased.
One of the most significant features of this yearly update is the ability of IMovie to open two movie files at once. This allows for the movie maker to make smaller movies without cut and paste. I also appreciate the ability to "share" the movie into ipod (mp4) format. The new new video Ipod is great for sharing short movies you have made. The encoding step is still fairly long. The IDVD and the IMovie are almost seamlessly woven in this version. One of the biggest issues is that here it is March and there are no significant help books out on it . Even Lynda.com above has not made tutorials on the new version. There are significant changes.
